Target Player

The player who cried at the end of Spiritfarer, spent forty hours arranging shelves in Unpacking, and wishes Potion Craft had narrative stakes. They read on the train. They linger in second-hand bookshops longer than is practical. This is not a farming sim — the loop is curation, connection, and the quiet pleasure of getting exactly right the thing no one else noticed.

Setting

Keldwick — a fictional harbour town in a soft early-20th-century register. Stone houses, fog-wrapped mornings, fishing boats, telegrams not phones. Deep navy and pewter-grey exteriors give way to the amber, sienna, and candlelight gold of the shop interior. The bookshop is the town's third place: where people come to think, remember, and be changed quietly.

Core Loop

30 seconds — Unpack a crate. Flip through sourced books. Each shows genre, era, condition tier, and a short excerpt. Reading the excerpt reveals the hidden Resonance tag (Grief, Wanderlust, First Love, Defiance…). Tag it. Slot it into memory.
5 minutes — Restore a damaged volume. Cleaning (slow brush strokes over grime overlay), structural repair (page-mending puzzle), aesthetic finishing (gilt edge touch-up). Unhurried. No fail state. Satisfying the way ironing a good shirt is satisfying.
30 minutes — Open the shop. Customers arrive with surface requests and emotional undercurrents. Scan your shelves. Select the candidate. A Resonance match triggers a character vignette. Close up. Review the ledger. Bid on next week's acquisition lots.

Key Features

What Makes It Different

  • 1
Emotional curation as skillThe player's expertise is attentiveness and book knowledge — not resource throughput. Mastery looks like wisdom, not efficiency.
  • 2
Object-as-character depthBooks carry histories. Players become attached to specific volumes and feel the meaning of placing them in the right hands.
  • 3
Emergent town narrativeThe story of Keldwick assembles from curation choices — no authored quest chains, just human ripple effects from each match.
  • 4
Setting genuinely unoccupiedAn antiquarian bookshop in an early-20th-century harbour town is absent from the entire recognised cozy sim canon.
