yfinance

yfinance wraps Yahoo Finance's public endpoints into one Python import, pulling historical OHLCV, fundamentals, options chains and a basic screener for equities, ETFs, indices, crypto and FX. It's been the fallback library retail quants reach for since the library's earliest days, with 25,000+ stars and a release, v1.6.0, that shipped August 13, 2026. `pip install yfinance` and you're pulling ten years of daily bars in your first script. **Pricing:** free and open source; there's no published rate limit since it rides on Yahoo's own undocumented endpoints, which can throttle without warning.

OpenBB

On August 25, 2026, OpenBB announced it's open-sourcing its entire commercial suite, including Workspace, Copilot and the Excel add-in, and winding the company down as a standalone business. The underlying package already covers equities, crypto, options, fixed income and macro series (FRED, IMF, BLS) behind one Python import and a self-hostable REST API; `pip install openbb` gets you the core aggregator today. **Pricing:** the core package is free (AGPLv3); the hosted Workspace keeps a free Community tier (20 Copilot queries/day) alongside a new paid Lite self-hosted tier around $1,200/year for small teams.

Databento

Databento streams real-time and 16-plus years of historical tick data across 15 equity exchanges, every major futures venue and all 18 US options exchanges, at a median latency of 590 microseconds. Cboe Futures Exchange and Blue Ocean ATS both went live as new venues in April 2026, part of a $97M Series B round announced in July. New accounts get a $125 credit toward historical pulls. **Pricing:** pay-per-GB for historical data with no subscription required, or $199/month for the Standard live-data plan; full-history unlimited access runs $4,500/month.

NautilusTrader

A Rust core paired with a Python control plane lets NautilusTrader run the exact same strategy code in backtest and in live trading, across crypto, FX, equities and futures. Version 2.0.0-rc3 landed August 20, 2026, the release-candidate milestone of a years-long rewrite off the old Cython v1 codebase. `pip install -U nautilus_trader` installs the whole event-driven engine, adapters included. **Pricing:** free and open source, LGPL-3.0.

QuantLib

QuantLib has been the reference C++ library for derivatives pricing, yield-curve bootstrapping and fixed-income modeling since the early 2000s, with official bindings for Python, Java, C# and R. Version 1.43 shipped July 14, 2026, the latest in a release cadence that hasn't slowed in two decades. `pip install QuantLib` is the fastest way in for anyone working from Python. **Pricing:** free and open source, modified BSD.

Riskfolio-Lib

`pip install riskfolio-lib` (Python 3.10+) puts 26-plus convex risk measures — CVaR, Sortino, conditional drawdown — plus risk-parity, hierarchical clustering and Black-Litterman allocation behind a few lines of code, built on CVXPY. It's carved out real adoption in the portfolio-optimization niche since 2020, and the latest release, 7.3.0, went out May 31, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source, BSD-3-Clause.

Alpaca Trading API

US equities, crypto and options share one account under Alpaca's Trading API, with official SDKs in Python, Node, Go and C#. Set `paper=True` on `alpaca-py`'s TradingClient and you're routing simulated orders against live prices within minutes of signing up. **Pricing:** paper trading and the Basic (IEX) market-data feed are free; full consolidated market data requires the paid Algo Trader Plus tier.

ccxt

Binance, OKX, Bybit, Hyperliquid and more than a hundred other exchanges all answer to the same method calls under ccxt, in JavaScript, Python, PHP, Go and half a dozen other languages. It's been the default abstraction layer under crypto trading bots since 2017, with roughly 100,000 commits and no sign of slowing. `pip install ccxt` and you can swap exchange classes without rewriting a strategy. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT; you pay only whatever fees the underlying exchange charges.

PMXT

PMXT does for prediction markets what ccxt did for crypto exchanges: one interface for placing and managing orders across Polymarket, Kalshi, Limitless, Myriad and a dozen other venues. The project didn't exist before January 2026 and had shipped past version 2.5 by July, tracking the category's growing regulatory attention. `pip install pmxt` self-hosts free with your own keys, or use the hosted API instead. **Pricing:** self-hosted core is free (MIT); the hosted API has a free tier (25,000 credits/month, 60 requests/minute) with paid tiers starting at $29.99/month.

hledger

Plain-text journal files, double-entry bookkeeping, and reports from the command line, a TUI or a local web UI: hledger has run on that formula since 2007 and still ships regularly, most recently release 1.52.2 on August 24, 2026. Point it at a `.journal` file and you're recording transactions in a format you can read and diff yourself. **Pricing:** free and open source, GPL-3.0-or-later.

Wealthfolio

Wealthfolio tracks positions and performance across multiple brokerage accounts, with a benchmark-aware dashboard and a net-worth view spanning assets and liabilities. Version 3.4.0 (May 15, 2026) added a self-hosted Docker mode alongside the existing desktop app, and releases have kept coming roughly every two weeks since. `docker pull wealthfolio/wealthfolio:latest` runs it on your own server. **Pricing:** free and open source (AGPL-3.0); an optional paid add-on, Wealthfolio Connect, handles automated brokerage sync.

SolidInvoice

EdgarTools

EdgarTools parses SEC filings — 10-Ks, 10-Qs, Form 4 insider trades, 13F holdings, proxy statements — into typed Python objects and pandas DataFrames by reading the underlying XBRL data instead of scraping HTML. The project has years of continuous commits behind it and shipped release 5.53.0 on August 25, 2026. `pip install edgartools` and the only thing it asks of you is a SEC-required identity header. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT.

sec-edgar-mcp

Point an MCP client at sec-edgar-mcp and it can ask for a company's balance sheet and get exact XBRL-parsed numbers back, instead of a summarized guess — filings, financial statements and insider-trading forms are all exposed as tools. Version 1.1.0 shipped August 20, 2026 with 21 tools and a rewrite onto a new underlying toolkit. Run it with Docker, or install through pip or uvx. **Pricing:** free and open source, AGPL-3.0; commercial licensing is available by contacting the maintainer directly.

FinToolBench

FinToolBench tests whether an LLM agent picks the right financial tool for a job, not just whether it can talk about finance: 295 questions that require calling real tools drawn from 760 free-tier financial APIs, scored on regulatory-domain alignment and timeliness as well as correctness. The repo and its accompanying arXiv paper both went up in March 2026. Clone it, install the requirements, and run the eval script against your own model. **Pricing:** free to use; no license file is published in the repo, so check before commercial use.

Stripe API

Roughly 4.8 million active businesses route card and bank payments through Stripe's REST API, using Payment Intents for checkout and Connect for marketplace payouts. `npm install -g @stripe/cli`, grab a key, and the quickstart has a test payment going in a handful of lines. **Pricing:** standard cards run 1.5% + €0.25 per transaction in the EEA (rates vary by region and card type), with custom volume pricing above that.

Blnk

Blnk is a self-hosted, open-source ledger that models every money movement as an immutable double-entry transaction, with reconciliation against bank statements and processor payouts built in, plus SDKs in TypeScript, Go, Python and Java. Five releases shipped between June and August 2026 alone, most recently v0.15.3 on August 25. `git clone` the repo and `docker compose up` to run your own instance. **Pricing:** self-hosting is free (Apache-2.0); the managed Blnk Cloud starts at $1,000/month for 200,000 records, plus $0.00175 per additional record.

TaxJar API

Sub-20-millisecond, jurisdiction-level sales-tax calculation is TaxJar's core job, with automated return filing on top and native hooks into Stripe, WooCommerce and BigCommerce checkout. Sign up for the 30-day trial, grab an API key, and call the REST endpoint from checkout. **Pricing:** Starter is $39/month for up to 200 orders and 3 integrations; Professional is $99/month with 10,000 API calls/minute and 4 AutoFile credits a year.

The Graph

Write a subgraph, deploy it through Subgraph Studio, and query it like any other GraphQL endpoint: that's been the standard way to pull on-chain data since 2020, and The Graph now indexes more than 60 networks including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Solana and Bitcoin. **Pricing:** 100,000 queries a month are free, then $2 per additional 100,000 queries.

Envio

`pnpx envio init` with a contract address auto-generates an indexer's config, schema and handlers, backed by HyperSync, which Envio says retrieves chain data faster than raw JSON-RPC calls across 79-plus EVM chains plus Solana and Fuel. Tempo chain support and full-history Monad trace data both landed in an April 2026 update, alongside an experimental ClickHouse sink in a 3.0 alpha. **Pricing:** the free dev tier caps at 5GB storage and auto-deletes deployments after 30 days of inactivity; paid Production plans include 800 indexing hours a month, priced by quote.

DefiLlama API

No signup, no key: `curl api.llama.fi/protocols` and you get real protocol and chain TVL numbers back, along with token prices, stablecoin supply and DEX volume across effectively every tracked chain. It's become the aggregator the rest of the industry cites when it needs a TVL figure. **Pricing:** the public API is free with standard rate limits; a separate $300/month Pro API adds 38 extra endpoints, including token-unlock schedules and bridge flows.

Finviz

Finviz's screener filters equities on fundamental and technical criteria and renders sector heat maps, usable free with no signup required at finviz.com/screener. The free tier runs on delayed quotes. **Pricing:** free tier available; Elite, which unlocks real-time data, premarket quotes and CSV export, is $39.50/month or $299.50/year.

Global Macro Database

Forty-six macroeconomic variables — GDP, inflation, government finance, trade, unemployment — across 239 countries back to the year 1086, built from 160 cleaned and integrated sources: that's the scope Global Macro Database covers through an interactive web explorer and downloadable packages. Version 2026_06, released June 30, 2026, added 39 new source series and automated error monitoring. `pip install global_macro_data`, or reach for the R and Stata packages, or just browse the site directly. **Pricing:** free for academic and nonprofit research; commercial use, including at financial firms, requires a separate license.

Actual Budget is envelope budgeting — you only budget cash you actually have, not projected income — with cross-device sync and bank-import reconciliation, running entirely on a server you control. `docker compose up --detach` gets an instance running from the repo's compose file, and releases have landed roughly monthly all year, most recently v26.8.1 on August 7, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source (MIT); optional bank sync through SimpleFIN costs about $15/year in the US, or is free via GoCardless in the EU.

Sure

When the team behind Maybe Finance archived their repo in mid-2025 to pivot toward a B2B product, a community fork called Sure picked up where they left off. It tracks net worth across accounts, sets financial goals, values property and, as of a July 2026 release, tracks self-custody crypto wallets across Bitcoin, EVM chains and Solana.
