Market Data & APIs

yfinance
yfinance wraps Yahoo Finance's public endpoints into one Python import, pulling historical OHLCV, fundamentals, options chains and a basic screener for equities, ETFs, indices, crypto and FX. It's been the fallback library retail quants reach for since the library's earliest days, with 25,000+ stars and a release, v1.6.0, that shipped August 13, 2026. `pip install yfinance` and you're pulling ten years of daily bars in your first script. **Pricing:** free and open source; there's no published rate limit since it rides on Yahoo's own undocumented endpoints, which can throttle without warning.
OpenBB
On August 25, 2026, OpenBB announced it's open-sourcing its entire commercial suite, including Workspace, Copilot and the Excel add-in, and winding the company down as a standalone business. The underlying package already covers equities, crypto, options, fixed income and macro series (FRED, IMF, BLS) behind one Python import and a self-hostable REST API; `pip install openbb` gets you the core aggregator today. **Pricing:** the core package is free (AGPLv3); the hosted Workspace keeps a free Community tier (20 Copilot queries/day) alongside a new paid Lite self-hosted tier around $1,200/year for small teams.
Databento
Databento streams real-time and 16-plus years of historical tick data across 15 equity exchanges, every major futures venue and all 18 US options exchanges, at a median latency of 590 microseconds. Cboe Futures Exchange and Blue Ocean ATS both went live as new venues in April 2026, part of a $97M Series B round announced in July. New accounts get a $125 credit toward historical pulls. **Pricing:** pay-per-GB for historical data with no subscription required, or $199/month for the Standard live-data plan; full-history unlimited access runs $4,500/month.
Massive
In October 2025, Polygon.io renamed itself Massive and kept the same stock, options, forex, crypto and (now) futures feeds running underneath. This September it added a pay-per-request mode that settles in USDC over Base, no API key required, alongside the standard REST and WebSocket access. `pip install polygon-api-client` still points at the same endpoints if you don't need that new path. **Pricing:** the free Basic tier caps at 5 calls a minute, end-of-day data only, 2 years of history; paid plans start at $29/month for unlimited calls with a 15-minute delay and reach $199/month for real-time data.
Alpha Vantage
Stocks, forex, crypto, technical indicators and macro series all sit behind one Alpha Vantage API key, and an official MCP server now exposes more than 100 of those endpoints as callable tools instead of hand-written requests. Register for a free key at alphavantage.co, or point an MCP client at the server repo if you'd rather let an agent make the calls. **Pricing:** the free tier caps at 25 requests a day; paid plans start at $49.99/month for 75 requests per minute.
FRED API
FRED still holds 800,000-plus economic series from the St. Louis Fed: GDP, CPI, unemployment, rates, going back decades. Register for a free key and query the REST endpoint directly, or work through the `fredapi` Python wrapper. **Pricing:** free, with no published rate limit in the documentation.

Quant & Backtesting

NautilusTrader
A Rust core paired with a Python control plane lets NautilusTrader run the exact same strategy code in backtest and in live trading, across crypto, FX, equities and futures. Version 2.0.0-rc3 landed August 20, 2026, the release-candidate milestone of a years-long rewrite off the old Cython v1 codebase. `pip install -U nautilus_trader` installs the whole event-driven engine, adapters included. **Pricing:** free and open source, LGPL-3.0.
QuantLib
QuantLib has been the reference C++ library for derivatives pricing, yield-curve bootstrapping and fixed-income modeling since the early 2000s, with official bindings for Python, Java, C# and R. Version 1.43 shipped July 14, 2026, the latest in a release cadence that hasn't slowed in two decades. `pip install QuantLib` is the fastest way in for anyone working from Python. **Pricing:** free and open source, modified BSD.
Riskfolio-Lib
`pip install riskfolio-lib` (Python 3.10+) puts 26-plus convex risk measures — CVaR, Sortino, conditional drawdown — plus risk-parity, hierarchical clustering and Black-Litterman allocation behind a few lines of code, built on CVXPY. It's carved out real adoption in the portfolio-optimization niche since 2020, and the latest release, 7.3.0, went out May 31, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source, BSD-3-Clause.
QuantConnect LEAN
LEAN runs the identical strategy code in backtest and live trading across equities, options, futures, forex and crypto, in either C# or Python. `pip install lean` gets the CLI, or clone the repo and run the whole engine locally with Docker instead of QuantConnect's hosted cloud. **Pricing:** free and open source under Apache-2.0; the hosted QuantConnect Cloud platform layers its own paid tiers on top.
skfolio
skfolio brings mean-variance optimization, hierarchical risk parity and HERC clustering into an API shaped like scikit-learn's, so portfolio construction slots into the same pipeline as a classifier would. `pip install skfolio` and you're fitting an allocation model in a few lines. Version 1.3.4 shipped September 25, 2026, continuing a pace that's barely slowed since the project's 2025 arXiv paper. **Pricing:** free and open source, BSD-3-Clause.
Jesse
Jesse's indicator engine, more than 300 of them, now runs through Rust via PyO3 instead of pure Python, a change that landed across its v3 releases this month. `pip install jesse` or pull the Docker image, then connect it to Kraken Pro or KuCoin for live execution. Five releases shipped between September 12 and 23, 2026 alone. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT.

Trading & Broker SDKs

Alpaca Trading API
US equities, crypto and options share one account under Alpaca's Trading API, with official SDKs in Python, Node, Go and C#. Set `paper=True` on `alpaca-py`'s TradingClient and you're routing simulated orders against live prices within minutes of signing up. **Pricing:** paper trading and the Basic (IEX) market-data feed are free; full consolidated market data requires the paid Algo Trader Plus tier.
ccxt
Binance, OKX, Bybit, Hyperliquid and more than a hundred other exchanges all answer to the same method calls under ccxt, in JavaScript, Python, PHP, Go and half a dozen other languages. It's been the default abstraction layer under crypto trading bots since 2017, with roughly 100,000 commits and no sign of slowing. `pip install ccxt` and you can swap exchange classes without rewriting a strategy. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT; you pay only whatever fees the underlying exchange charges.
PMXT
PMXT does for prediction markets what ccxt did for crypto exchanges: one interface for placing and managing orders across Polymarket, Kalshi, Limitless, Myriad and a dozen other venues. The project didn't exist before January 2026 and had shipped past version 2.5 by July, tracking the category's growing regulatory attention. `pip install pmxt` self-hosts free with your own keys, or use the hosted API instead. **Pricing:** self-hosted core is free (MIT); the hosted API has a free tier (25,000 credits/month, 60 requests/minute) with paid tiers starting at $29.99/month.
Coinbase Advanced Trade API
Coinbase's own Python SDK covers spot and derivatives trading on Advanced Trade: order placement, portfolio management, market data, authenticated through the newer CDP keys instead of legacy credentials. `pip3 install coinbase-advanced-py` and a funded account is placing orders within a few lines. **Pricing:** the SDK is free; trades run on Coinbase's standard maker and taker fee schedule.
Schwabdev
When TD Ameritrade's API retired into the Schwab migration, it left a gap that Schwabdev has been filling with a maintained Python wrapper for quotes, streaming and order placement against the Schwab Trader API. `pip install schwabdev`, then register a separate app through Schwab's Developer Portal for credentials. Version 4.0.0 shipped August 9, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source; trading requires a funded Schwab brokerage account.
tastytrade
This unofficial async SDK for Tastytrade moves faster than the broker's own official client, with typed models for accounts, orders and streaming data built around the options-focused brokerage's API. `pip install tastytrade`, then authenticate with your Tastytrade account credentials. v13.2.3 went out August 7, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source; live use requires a funded Tastytrade account.

Portfolio & Accounting

hledger
Plain-text journal files, double-entry bookkeeping, and reports from the command line, a TUI or a local web UI: hledger has run on that formula since 2007 and still ships regularly, most recently release 1.52.2 on August 24, 2026. Point it at a `.journal` file and you're recording transactions in a format you can read and diff yourself. **Pricing:** free and open source, GPL-3.0-or-later.
Wealthfolio
Wealthfolio tracks positions and performance across multiple brokerage accounts, with a benchmark-aware dashboard and a net-worth view spanning assets and liabilities. Version 3.4.0 (May 15, 2026) added a self-hosted Docker mode alongside the existing desktop app, and releases have kept coming roughly every two weeks since. `docker pull wealthfolio/wealthfolio:latest` runs it on your own server. **Pricing:** free and open source (AGPL-3.0); an optional paid add-on, Wealthfolio Connect, handles automated brokerage sync.
SolidInvoice
A ground-up 3.0 rewrite of SolidInvoice went stable on June 17, 2026, adding a UI redesign, two-factor auth and flat-rate tax types on top of its existing client-invoicing and quoting workflow. `docker run -p 8080:80 solidinvoice/solidinvoice` gets a working instance up in one command. **Pricing:** the self-hosted edition is free (MIT); a hosted version starts around $9/month.
Akaunting
Double-entry bookkeeping, invoicing and expense tracking for small businesses run through Akaunting's Laravel app, which you can self-host or rent from the company directly. `docker run` the self-hosted image, and the Standard plan is free for up to two users, one company and 1,000 invoices a year, converting to GPLv3 four years after each release. **Pricing:** self-hosted Standard is free (BSL 1.1, later GPLv3); hosted Cloud plans start at $12/month for one company.
Beancount
Beancount defines transactions in a plain-text language, then compiles the ledger file into balance sheets, income statements and a queryable database rather than a spreadsheet. Write entries in any text editor, run `bean-check` to validate them, and add the Fava web UI if a browser view is more your speed. The last commit landed August 23, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source, GPL-2.0.
bankstatementparser
CAMT.053, PAIN.001, MT940, OFX, CSV, even scanned PDFs: bankstatementparser turns all of them into one unified transaction model, with balance verification and PII redaction built in, then exports straight into an hledger or Beancount ledger. `pip install bankstatementparser`, adding the `[hybrid]` extra for an LLM fallback on messy PDFs. Version 0.0.19 shipped September 1, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source, dual Apache-2.0/MIT.

Finance AI & Agents

EdgarTools
EdgarTools parses SEC filings — 10-Ks, 10-Qs, Form 4 insider trades, 13F holdings, proxy statements — into typed Python objects and pandas DataFrames by reading the underlying XBRL data instead of scraping HTML. The project has years of continuous commits behind it and shipped release 5.53.0 on August 25, 2026. `pip install edgartools` and the only thing it asks of you is a SEC-required identity header. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT.
sec-edgar-mcp
Point an MCP client at sec-edgar-mcp and it can ask for a company's balance sheet and get exact XBRL-parsed numbers back, instead of a summarized guess — filings, financial statements and insider-trading forms are all exposed as tools. Version 1.1.0 shipped August 20, 2026 with 21 tools and a rewrite onto a new underlying toolkit. Run it with Docker, or install through pip or uvx. **Pricing:** free and open source, AGPL-3.0; commercial licensing is available by contacting the maintainer directly.
FinToolBench
FinToolBench tests whether an LLM agent picks the right financial tool for a job, not just whether it can talk about finance: 295 questions that require calling real tools drawn from 760 free-tier financial APIs, scored on regulatory-domain alignment and timeliness as well as correctness. The repo and its accompanying arXiv paper both went up in March 2026. Clone it, install the requirements, and run the eval script against your own model. **Pricing:** free to use; no license file is published in the repo, so check before commercial use.
FinGPT
FinGPT fine-tunes open base models with lightweight LoRA adapters for sentiment analysis, forecasting and robo-advising on financial news and social data, rather than training a finance model from scratch. Clone the repo and `pip install -r requirements.txt`, or grab pretrained checkpoints from Hugging Face. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT; you only pay for whatever base-model inference you run it on.
TradingAgents
Separate LLM agents handle fundamental, sentiment and technical analysis in TradingAgents, then hand their output to trader and risk-management agents built on LangGraph, with point-in-time data integrity so a backtest can't accidentally see the future. `pip install .` from a cloned repo and supply a key for whichever model provider runs the agents. Version 0.5.1 shipped this September with SEC EDGAR fundamentals and a reorganized package layout. **Pricing:** free and open source, Apache-2.0; you pay your model provider for the inference.
financial-reports-mcp-server
European company filings, financials and ISINs come through this MCP server as sixteen tools by default, expandable to 46 for the full FinancialReports API surface. Sign up free at financialreports.eu, then `claude mcp add --transport http financialreports https://mcp.financialfilings.com/mcp` and authenticate in the browser, no manual key handling required. **Pricing:** free account and MCP access; whether a paid tier exists at higher usage isn't disclosed on the signup page.

Fintech Infrastructure

Stripe API
Roughly 4.8 million active businesses route card and bank payments through Stripe's REST API, using Payment Intents for checkout and Connect for marketplace payouts. `npm install -g @stripe/cli`, grab a key, and the quickstart has a test payment going in a handful of lines. **Pricing:** standard cards run 1.5% + €0.25 per transaction in the EEA (rates vary by region and card type), with custom volume pricing above that.
Blnk
Blnk is a self-hosted, open-source ledger that models every money movement as an immutable double-entry transaction, with reconciliation against bank statements and processor payouts built in, plus SDKs in TypeScript, Go, Python and Java. Five releases shipped between June and August 2026 alone, most recently v0.15.3 on August 25. `git clone` the repo and `docker compose up` to run your own instance. **Pricing:** self-hosting is free (Apache-2.0); the managed Blnk Cloud starts at $1,000/month for 200,000 records, plus $0.00175 per additional record.
TaxJar API
Sub-20-millisecond, jurisdiction-level sales-tax calculation is TaxJar's core job, with automated return filing on top and native hooks into Stripe, WooCommerce and BigCommerce checkout. Sign up for the 30-day trial, grab an API key, and call the REST endpoint from checkout. **Pricing:** Starter is $39/month for up to 200 orders and 3 integrations; Professional is $99/month with 10,000 API calls/minute and 4 AutoFile credits a year.
Plaid
Most US and Canadian fintech apps still link a user's bank account through Plaid: balances, transactions, identity data and ACH details behind one API, with SDKs in Node, Python, Java, Go and Ruby. A free Sandbox key returns realistic fake transaction data in minutes, and a Limited Production tier then allows up to 200 live calls per product for real testing. **Pricing:** Sandbox and Limited Production are free; pay-as-you-go, Growth and Scale tiers are priced by quote and not published.
Formance Ledger
Formance Ledger is a programmable core ledger meant to sit as the system of record under a payments or banking product, modeling atomic double-entry transactions through its own Numscript DSL. `docker run` the compose setup, or install a standalone binary through Homebrew or apt. Commits are landing daily even though the last tagged GitHub release dates back to a 2024 beta. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT; Formance also sells a managed cloud tier separately.
Midaz
Midaz is a cloud-native, multi-currency core ledger from Lerian, paired with companion services for onboarding orchestration, real-time transaction risk and regulatory reporting. `git clone` the repo, run `make set-env` and `make up`, and the Ledger API comes up on port 3002 through Docker. Lerian raised a R$30 million seed round in January 2026 and commits have kept landing daily since. **Pricing:** free to self-host under the Elastic License 2.0, source-available rather than OSI open source; no separate paid tier is published.
OpenSanctions / Yente
Yente is the self-hostable matching engine behind OpenSanctions' sanctions, PEP and watchlist data, the screening layer under most KYC and AML checks. Run it with `docker-compose` against your own ElasticSearch index, or call the hosted API after a business-email signup. A July 2026 collaboration with transaction-monitoring vendor Marble produced a faster matching engine plus a new client SDK and MCP server. **Pricing:** self-hosted Yente is free (MIT); the hosted API runs €0.10 per query after a 30-day trial.

Crypto & On-Chain

The Graph
Write a subgraph, deploy it through Subgraph Studio, and query it like any other GraphQL endpoint: that's been the standard way to pull on-chain data since 2020, and The Graph now indexes more than 60 networks including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Solana and Bitcoin. **Pricing:** 100,000 queries a month are free, then $2 per additional 100,000 queries.
Envio
`pnpx envio init` with a contract address auto-generates an indexer's config, schema and handlers, backed by HyperSync, which Envio says retrieves chain data faster than raw JSON-RPC calls across 79-plus EVM chains plus Solana and Fuel. Tempo chain support and full-history Monad trace data both landed in an April 2026 update, alongside an experimental ClickHouse sink in a 3.0 alpha. **Pricing:** the free dev tier caps at 5GB storage and auto-deletes deployments after 30 days of inactivity; paid Production plans include 800 indexing hours a month, priced by quote.
DefiLlama API
No signup, no key: `curl api.llama.fi/protocols` and you get real protocol and chain TVL numbers back, along with token prices, stablecoin supply and DEX volume across effectively every tracked chain. It's become the aggregator the rest of the industry cites when it needs a TVL figure. **Pricing:** the public API is free with standard rate limits; a separate $300/month Pro API adds 38 extra endpoints, including token-unlock schedules and bridge flows.
Reth
Reth is Paradigm's Rust implementation of the Ethereum execution client, modular enough to run as a full or archive node or embed directly into a Rust application. `cargo install reth`, or run the official Docker image instead of building from source. Version 2.6.0 shipped September 17, 2026, on a cadence that's landed roughly every one to two weeks all year. **Pricing:** free and open source.
viem
viem has taken over from ethers.js as the default TypeScript interface for much of the Ethereum ecosystem: typed contract calls, ABI encoding, wallet and RPC clients, EIP-712 signing, with the type inference that made it popular in the first place. `npm install viem` and a contract call comes with full autocomplete on its ABI. **Pricing:** free and open source.
rindexer
rindexer indexes EVM contract events into a Postgres-backed dataset with a GraphQL API on top, configured entirely in YAML unless custom logic calls for dropping into Rust handlers. `curl -L https://rindexer.xyz/install.sh | bash`, or run the Docker image against a fresh project path. The project only broke out this year, with 887 commits already on the main branch and a push as recent as September 16, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source.
Safe{Core} SDK
Most custody and smart-account products on Ethereum build against Safe{Core}'s Protocol, API and Relay kits: creating and executing multisig transactions, sponsoring gas through ERC-4337 without asking a user to hold ETH. `npm install @safe-global/protocol-kit` gets the core package, and the Transaction Service behind it is free to call. **Pricing:** free and open source, MIT.

Research & Screening

Finviz
Finviz's screener filters equities on fundamental and technical criteria and renders sector heat maps, usable free with no signup required at finviz.com/screener. The free tier runs on delayed quotes. **Pricing:** free tier available; Elite, which unlocks real-time data, premarket quotes and CSV export, is $39.50/month or $299.50/year.
Global Macro Database
Forty-six macroeconomic variables — GDP, inflation, government finance, trade, unemployment — across 239 countries back to the year 1086, built from 160 cleaned and integrated sources: that's the scope Global Macro Database covers through an interactive web explorer and downloadable packages. Version 2026_06, released June 30, 2026, added 39 new source series and automated error monitoring. `pip install global_macro_data`, or reach for the R and Stata packages, or just browse the site directly. **Pricing:** free for academic and nonprofit research; commercial use, including at financial firms, requires a separate license.
Koyfin
Dashboards, screeners, charting and macro data from S&P Capital IQ come together in Koyfin's free browser-based terminal, positioned as a Bloomberg alternative with no install required. The free tier caps out at two dashboards, two watchlists and two screens before hitting a paywall. **Pricing:** free tier available (2 dashboards/watchlists/screens, 2-year financials); Plus is $39/month, Premium $79/month, up to $299/month for Advisor Pro.
FinanceToolkit
FinanceToolkit computes more than 150 financial ratios, valuation metrics and performance measures directly from raw financial statements, showing its formulas instead of hiding them behind a score. `pip install financetoolkit -U`, then supply a Financial Modeling Prep API key for the underlying statement data. Version 2.2.0 shipped August 18, 2026 on a steady monthly cadence. **Pricing:** the library is free and open source (MIT); the FMP data behind it carries its own separate free tier.
quantstats
quantstats turns a plain return series into a full tearsheet: Sharpe ratio, drawdowns, volatility, win rate, rendered as an HTML report instead of a notebook someone has to open and run. `pip install quantstats --upgrade`, then call `quantstats.reports.html()` against your returns. **Pricing:** free and open source, Apache-2.0.

Personal Finance Tools

Actual Budget
Actual Budget is envelope budgeting — you only budget cash you actually have, not projected income — with cross-device sync and bank-import reconciliation, running entirely on a server you control. `docker compose up --detach` gets an instance running from the repo's compose file, and releases have landed roughly monthly all year, most recently v26.8.1 on August 7, 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source (MIT); optional bank sync through SimpleFIN costs about $15/year in the US, or is free via GoCardless in the EU.
Sure
When the team behind Maybe Finance archived their repo in mid-2025 to pivot toward a B2B product, a community fork called Sure picked up where they left off. It tracks net worth across accounts, sets financial goals, values property and, as of a July 2026 release, tracks self-custody crypto wallets across Bitcoin, EVM chains and Solana. Self-host it with Docker, or deploy in one click through Railway or PikaPods. **Pricing:** free and open source (AGPL-3.0), with no required payment to self-host. --- *25 tools this month. Nothing here is investment advice. Found a dead link or have something to add? Reply to the email.*
Ghostfolio
Ghostfolio tracks net worth and portfolio performance, stocks, ETFs, crypto, across every account you connect, with FIRE-oriented benchmarking built into the dashboard. `docker pull ghostfolio/ghostfolio` and stand it up against Postgres and Redis on your own server. An experimental MCP watchlist tool landed behind an `ENABLE_FEATURE_MCP` flag in the September 20, 2026 release. **Pricing:** self-hosting is free (AGPL-3.0); the hosted Ghostfolio Premium cloud plan runs around $48/year.
Firefly III
Firefly III has run self-hosted budgets, bills and bank-import rules for years, and just went through its biggest visual overhaul yet: a full layout redesign in v6.7.0, followed a day later by a switch from Twig to Blade templating. `docker run fireflyiii/core:latest` gets an instance up, with patch releases landing almost daily through September 2026. **Pricing:** free and open source, AGPL-3.0. --- *28 tools this month. Nothing here is investment advice. Found a dead link or have something to add? Reply to the email.*
