Discovery of the Week

A rose-colored rock picked up in the Sahara Desert in 2022 turns out to be one of the oldest pieces of Mars ever found on Earth: NASA-funded scientists dated its minerals and determined it formed more than 4.1 billion years ago. A meteorite is simply a chunk of space rock that survived its fall through Earth's atmosphere, and this one (named Teghaza 001) carries a chemical and mineral fingerprint that lets researchers hunt for its birthplace. A new global map narrows the candidates to 13 sites in the southern highlands of Mars — a rare window into the planet's earliest crust.
