On the night of January 13th, 2012, Captain Francesco Schettino does something captains are trained never to do. He steers the Costa Concordia, a 114,000-ton cruise liner carrying more than 4,200 people, off its charted course for a tight pass by the island of Giglio. It's a move some captains use to put on a show, lights blazing, close enough that people on shore can wave back. Schettino runs the approach by eye, not by radar.
