New $1,200 Wellness Ring Diagnoses Wearer With Anxiety About Having Spent $1,200 On Wellness Ring

AUSTIN, TX — Aurelia Health's flagship wearable, a titanium band that already tracks 73 biomarkers including heart rate variability and what the company calls "cortisol shadow load," has identified a 74th: the specific, rising dread of having paid $1,200 for a ring that measures dread.

The feature showed up unannounced in a firmware update called Clarity 4.1, which also added a push notification reading "Your Regret Score is elevated. Consider breathwork." Wearers can't turn the notification off without paying $14.99 to unlock what Aurelia calls the Acceptance Tier, which swaps the alert for a photo of a mountain.

"I bought the ring so I'd sleep better," said Priya Natarajan, 31, a marketing coordinator in Round Rock who has worn hers since March. "Now it wakes me up at two in the morning to tell me I'm stressed about the ring. I check the app to see how stressed. Checking costs $9.99 a month."

Aurelia founder and self-appointed chief vitality officer Dade Loring called the backlash a misunderstanding of the company's mission. "We're not making anyone anxious," Loring said. "We're the first wellness company honest enough to bill people for noticing."

An internal white paper Aurelia emailed to reporters unprompted found that 94 percent of ring-wearers who left notifications on developed new or worse financial anxiety within six weeks — a number the company's press release cited as "proof of product efficacy." A rival firm, Austin-based Threnody Labs, has already unveiled a ring that tracks users' anxiety about Aurelia's anxiety-tracking ring. It costs $1,350.

At press time, Aurelia had entered beta testing on a feature called Closure, which notifies wearers the instant their extended warranty lapses, then charges $22 to tell them how that feels.
