Neon Shatter
Design brief
A fast-paced neon brick-breaker where every hit lights up the dark — smash glowing bricks, grab power-ups, and survive five escalating levels.
Date: 2026-06-17 Genre: brick-breaker Status: Playable build
Concept
Neon Shatter drops the player into a dark arena lined with glowing brick walls, where a single luminous ball and a neon paddle are all that stand between order and chaos. The fantasy is pure arcade reflex satisfaction — the crack of a two-hit brick splitting, the cascade of particles as a full row goes dark, the panic when the ball accelerates in the later levels. Five levels of progressively hardened brick layouts push the player from warm-up to full sweat.
How to play
Prevent the ball from falling off the bottom of the screen by keeping the paddle beneath it. The ball destroys any brick it touches. Clear all bricks to advance to the next level. Lose all three lives and it's game over.
- Mouse / Touch-drag: move the paddle left and right
- A/D or ←/→: keyboard paddle movement
- Click / Tap / Space: launch the ball from the paddle (also continues after a life lost)
- R: restart from the beginning
Core mechanics
- Angle reflection: the paddle is curved logically — hitting the left edge sends the ball left, the center sends it straight up, and the right edge sends it right, giving precise directional control.
- Two-hit bricks: the top two brick rows (red) require two hits; they show a crack visual after the first hit.
- Power-ups: three types drop randomly from destroyed bricks — W (wide paddle, 10 seconds), M (multi-shot laser mode, 10 seconds), L (activates laser cannons; fire with Space while M is active).
- Ball trail: each ball leaves a cyan ghost trail, making speed and angle readable at a glance.
- Level progression: clearing all bricks advances the level; brick count and top-row strength increase each level, and ball speed ramps with level number.
Progression & scoring
Five levels total. Ball base speed increases by 0.3 per level. Level 2+ adds an extra hit point to the top two brick rows. Score is points-per-brick × current level multiplier (top bricks worth 50 pts, bottom rows 10–40 pts). Power-ups reward risk: catching a falling W or M mid-panic is worth the momentary distraction.
Look & feel
Pure neon-on-dark arcade aesthetic: #0a0a1a background with a subtle cyan grid, bricks rendered with color-coded glow (red → orange → yellow → green → cyan → purple), and a radial-gradient ball with a cyan trailing comet. The paddle shifts color to signal active power-ups (green for wide, magenta for multi-shot). All audio is absent intentionally — the visual particle bursts and glow flashes carry the impact feedback. Canvas 2D API, zero dependencies.
What makes it fun
- The angle system turns the paddle into a skill tool, not a passive wall — redirecting a fast ball to thread through a gap feels earned.
- Two-hit bricks and crack visuals create satisfying "almost there" moments at the top rows that build tension before they collapse.
- Three distinct power-ups with clear icons mean players have something to chase mid-play without reading a manual.
- Level multiplier scoring makes higher levels feel genuinely more rewarding — every brick cleared in level 5 is worth five times a level-1 brick.
