Spore Sprawl

Spore Sprawl
Prototype
Design brief

Tap a glowing forest mushroom to earn spores, then hire a colony of critters that harvest for you around the clock.

Date: 2026-07-25 Genre: Idle Clicker Status: Playable build

Concept

Spore Sprawl is a cozy forest-floor idle clicker: you tend a single glowing mushroom, tapping it for spores while a growing cast of woodland helpers — snails, fireflies, beetles, elves, owls, and an ancient treant — keep the harvest flowing even when you're not clicking. The fantasy is quiet cultivation: watch a tiny grove snowball into a bustling nocturnal ecosystem.

How to play

Click or tap the pulsing mushroom (or press Space/Enter) to harvest spores directly. Spend spores in the Colony panel to hire producers that generate spores automatically every second, or press number keys 1-6 to buy the matching producer. Switch to the Upgrades tab to spend spores on one-time boosts that multiply click power or specific producers. There's no lose state — the goal is to grow your total spore count and spores-per-second as high as possible. Press R or the Restart button (with a confirmation) to reset the colony and start over.

Core mechanics

  • Manual harvesting — clicking/tapping the mushroom grants an immediate spore burst, scaled by click-power upgrades.
  • Six producers with exponentially rising costs (×1.15 per purchase) and increasing base output, so early snails give way to a late-game ancient treant.
  • One-time upgrades that double specific producer output, boost click power, add a spores-per-second kicker to clicks, or multiply all production globally.
  • Offline earnings — spores keep accruing (at half rate) while the tab is closed, calculated from the saved timestamp on reload.
  • Autosave to localStorage every 5 seconds and on page unload, so progress persists across sessions.

Progression & scoring

The visible score is total spores banked plus a live spores-per-second readout. Early game is driven by manual clicking and cheap snails; as producer costs climb exponentially, spores/sec from fireflies, beetles, elves, owls, and the treant take over, and upgrades periodically unlock new multiplier tiers (2x, 3x, 1.5x global, 2x global) that meaningfully accelerate the curve. There's no explicit end — the loop is designed for "just one more purchase" pacing.

Look & feel

A hand-drawn-style canvas mushroom with a cute stem-face sits in a moody green forest clearing, pulsing gently and bursting with pale green spore particles on every harvest. Ambient fireflies drift across the scene, their count scaling with how many Firefly Swarms you've hired, so the world visibly fills up as you progress. All sound (harvest chirps, purchase chimes) is synthesized live with the WebAudio API — no audio files.

What makes it fun

  • The mushroom scene visibly reacts to your progress (more fireflies appear as you buy them), so the idle economy isn't hidden behind numbers alone.
  • Offline earnings reward checking back in without punishing players who click actively.
  • A tight six-producer, eight-upgrade curve keeps meaningful decisions coming without idle-game bloat.
  • Fully playable with just tapping — no menus or setup before the first spore.
