North Lake Tahoe Beach Guide

The concept

North Lake Tahoe has more public beaches than most visitors realize — they're just spread across two states, several different land managers, and a mix of drive-up lots and short hike-in trails. This map pulls 14 real beaches into one guide, grouped into four practical categories:

• 🟡 State Park Beach — Kings Beach State Recreation Area and Sand Harbor State Park. Full amenities, day-use fees, and (at Sand Harbor) a peak-season reservation window.
• 🟢 Public Day-Use Beach — free or low-fee California North Shore beaches from Tahoe City to Kings Beach: William Kent, Commons, Skylandia, Lake Forest, Patton Landing, North Tahoe Beach, and Moon Dunes.
• 🟠 Hike-In Beach — the Nevada East Shore's quieter coves reached on foot: Hidden Beach, Chimney Beach, Secret Cove, and Whale Beach.
• 🔵 Trail Access Point — the Tahoe East Shore Trail trailhead in Incline Village, the paved route that connects several of the Nevada stops.

Anyone spending a beach day (or several) around North Lake Tahoe — locals who want to branch out past the one beach they always default to, and visitors trying to tell the difference between a $10 state-park lot and a free hike-in cove before they drive there.

The dashed line traces a rough west-to-east, then north-to-south route — Tahoe City around to Kings Beach, then down the Nevada shore from Incline Village to Whale Beach — not a literal driving route.

Top stops

• Sand Harbor State Park — the Nevada shore's showpiece: turquoise water, granite snorkeling coves, and the summer Shakespeare Festival. Peak-season vehicle reservations required 8:00–10:30am.
• Kings Beach State Recreation Area — the North Shore's largest, warmest-water flagship beach, with a boat-rental pier and playground.
• Chimney Beach — a short hike-in cove named for a surviving stone chimney ruin, now with a new 2026 paid-parking system.
• Moon Dunes Beach — often called the finest white sand on the lake, reached by a short path across a dune.
• Hidden Beach — the easiest "hike-in" beach on this list, since the approach is a flat, paved section of the East Shore Trail.

Verify before you go

Beach rules, fees, and parking systems around Tahoe change often. Before visiting, double-check:

• Sand Harbor's exact 2026 reservation date window on parks.nv.gov — two official pages showed slightly different season-start dates at research time.
• Whether the new $12/day Chimney Beach/Secret Harbor parking fee also applies to the Secret Cove/Whale Beach trail access point, since they share a lot.
• Current dog policies — most of these beaches ban dogs on the sand year-round or seasonally; a few (Lake Forest, Patton Landing) allow leashed dogs in specific areas only.
• Water is cold even in summer, and most of these beaches have no lifeguards — swim with caution, especially with kids.
• The "clothing-optional" reputation noted for a few East Shore coves (Hidden Beach, Chimney Beach, Secret Cove, Whale Beach) comes from travel-writer sources, not an official park designation — Nevada indecent-exposure law still applies.
