Comet Dash

Comet Dash
Prototype
Design brief

Swipe through three lanes of wreckage as a runaway comet, chaining stardust orbs for bigger points until one wrong read ends the streak.

Date: 2026-07-30 Genre: Endless runner Platform: Mobile (portrait, touch-first) Status: Playable build

Concept

You're a comet skidding down a three-lane space highway that never stops accelerating. Rocks, energy bars, and full-lane crystal walls come at you one at a time, and every one of them asks a different question: jump, duck, or move? Get it wrong once and the run is over.

How to play

Swipe left or right to switch lanes, swipe up to jump, swipe down to duck. On desktop, the arrow keys do the same job. Tap anywhere on the start or game-over screen to launch or relaunch (press R if you'd rather use the keyboard). Rocks need a jump, energy bars need a duck, and the pink crystal walls can only be beaten by changing lanes — there's no ducking or jumping through those.

Core mechanics

  • Three lanes, one obstacle at a time, so there's always a way out — the trick is choosing it fast enough
  • Three obstacle types with distinct answers: jump the rock, duck the bar, or dodge the wall by switching lanes
  • Stardust orbs drift down the lanes for bonus points, but grabbing them can pull you straight into an obstacle's lane
  • A collection streak that pays out more per orb the longer you keep it alive, and resets the moment you let one go past
  • Speed climbs continuously, and the mix shifts toward more full-lane walls as the run goes on, so late-game decisions get less forgiving

Progression & scoring

Score climbs on its own as you cover distance, and speeds up along with the comet. Orbs add a flat bonus that grows with your current streak (worth more at streak six than at streak one), so the game keeps nudging you to lean into a risky lane instead of playing it safe. Best score is saved on the device and shown next to your current run.

Look & feel

Deep space palette — navy and violet gradients, a slow-drifting starfield, neon cyan for jump cues and hot pink for the walls you can't get through. The comet itself is a soft white-cyan glow that squashes flat when it ducks and stretches tall mid-jump, with a short fading trail behind it. Every hit, dodge, and collect has its own WebAudio blip, and the phone frame keeps the whole thing feeling like something you'd actually thumb through on a commute.

What makes it fun

  • The always-open-lane rule means you never die to bad luck — every crash is a read you got wrong, which stings in the right way
  • The streak system turns "grab the orb" into a real gamble: swerve into a maybe-bad lane for the payout, or play it safe and watch the multiplier reset
  • Jump and duck cues appear early enough to react, but the game keeps shortening that window as speed builds, so the last ten seconds of any run feel like a knife's edge
  • One clean dash after a near-miss is enough to want the very next run
