Hive Breach
Design brief
Tap sockets along a winding tunnel to raise and upgrade turrets before the broods crawling toward your Core outpace you.
Date: 2026-08-27 Genre: Tower defense Platform: Mobile (portrait, touch-first) Status: Playable build
Concept
A swarm is working its way down a single tunnel toward your Core, and resin is the only thing standing between you and a breach. Every tap spends it: build a turret in an empty socket, or pour more into one you already have. The game never asks for more than one gesture, but it asks you to make that gesture at the right moment, on the right socket, with resin you could have saved for something bigger.
How to play
Tap an empty socket to build a Tier 1 turret. Tap a built turret again to spend resin on its next tier, up to Tier 3. Turrets fire on their own at whatever enemy is furthest along the tunnel. Mouse click does the same thing on desktop. The Core has 10 hit points; every enemy that reaches it takes a bite. Lose all 10 and the run ends. Press R (or tap the retry button) to go again.
Core mechanics
- One socket grid along a fixed tunnel path. Tapping is the only input the game asks for.
- Resin trickles in on its own and pays out bigger on kills, so every tap is a choice between building now or saving for a stronger turret later.
- Three enemy types unlock on a timer: armored Brutes at wave 3 slow turrets down with raw hit points, and fast, fragile Swarm broods at wave 5 arrive three at a time and punish turrets with no splash damage.
- A Tier 3 turret splashes nearby enemies for half damage, which is the direct answer to a Swarm cluster if you saved up for it in time.
- Chain three kills within two seconds and every turret fires 35% faster for four seconds, a payoff for staying aggressive instead of playing it safe.
Progression & scoring
Every 22 seconds the wave count ticks up: spawn interval drops by 10%, enemy speed climbs 8%, and enemy health scales with it, capping out around wave 15 so a long run does not just become unfair. Scuttlers, the base enemy, are worth 5 resin and points that scale with the current wave; Brutes pay 12; Swarm broodlings pay only 2 each but come in threes. Score is kills times their wave-scaled point value, doubled in weight during a Surge. There's no meta-progression between runs. The tension all lives inside the 22-second wave clock.
Look & feel
The tunnel is a dark, mossy stroke through a cavern floor, sockets glow faintly until claimed, and each turret tier grows a sharper, brighter crystal shape as it upgrades. Enemies are simple silhouettes in sickly green, dull red, and pale yellow so a Brute reads as a threat before you've read its health bar. All of it renders on canvas, and every sound (the build chime, the upgrade sweep, the sawtooth hit, the low breach thud) comes out of a single WebAudio oscillator function, unlocked the first time you tap. The whole thing sits inside a portrait phone frame so it reads as a phone game even before you touch it.
What makes it fun
- The build-versus-save decision never goes away: spend now on a weak turret, or hold resin through a dangerous wave hoping you can afford the turret that actually stops it.
- Swarm broods are a direct counter-test for whether you saved up a splash turret in time, which turns "did I upgrade the right socket" into the thing that decides a run.
- The Surge streak rewards staying on the aggressive line instead of turtling, which is the opposite of what most tower defense games teach you to do.
