Mole Mayhem

Mole Mayhem
Prototype
Design brief

Bonk moles as fast as you can in a 30-second tap frenzy — but watch out for bomb moles!

Date: 2026-07-16 Genre: whack-a-mole Platform: Mobile (portrait, touch-first) Status: Playable build

Concept

Mole Mayhem is a fast-paced casual tap game where moles pop out of 9 holes in a grassy field and the player must bonk them before they duck back underground. Gold star moles offer a 3× point bonus, while sinister bomb moles drain your score if tapped — forcing quick judgment calls under time pressure. The game captures the classic "reflex rush" fantasy of being just fast enough to clear the board.

How to play

The player has 30 seconds to score as many points as possible. Tap a mole the moment it appears to bonk it. On desktop, click with the mouse, or press number keys 1–9 to bonk the corresponding grid hole (left-to-right, top-to-bottom). Press R to restart at any time. Let a mole escape without tapping and your combo streak resets. Tap a bomb mole and lose 5 points. Game ends when the timer hits zero; best score is saved locally.

Core mechanics

  • Tap-to-bonk — moles rise from holes over 0.18 s with a spring animation; tap/click the hole to bonk and retract the mole with a satisfying hit flash and floating score popup
  • Three mole types — normal (10 pts), star/gold (30 pts, glows yellow), bomb (−5 pts, red nose glow)
  • Combo multiplier — consecutive successful hits without missing build a streak; every 3 hits adds ×1 to the multiplier (caps at ×5), shown in a badge overlay
  • Level scaling — score milestones increase the level (every 80 pts), shortening mole stay-up time and tightening the spawn interval; level 3+ can pop two moles simultaneously
  • Local high-score persistence — best score stored in localStorage so it survives page reloads

Progression & scoring

Each point threshold increments the level (max 10). Mole up-time shrinks from ~1.6 s at level 1 to ~0.6 s at level 10; spawn gaps shrink similarly, creating a frantic late-game pace. Combo multipliers reward sustained accuracy — a ×5 streak turns a single star hit into 150 points. Missing a mole (it retreats naturally) breaks the combo without a score penalty, so the cost of caution is losing streak value rather than points.

Look & feel

The game renders inside a portrait phone-bezel frame on a dark space-blue backdrop. The play field is a sunny green meadow with a blue sky, white-cloud accents, and oval dirt holes. Moles are hand-crafted from layered divs (brown body, pink ears/snout, dark eyes with glint, three-claw hands). Hit feedback is a 💥 burst emoji animation plus a floating colored score popup. Audio feedback is delegated to the native haptic vibration API (20ms pulse on each bonk) on mobile. The warm earth palette (#c8915e brown, #ffe066 gold, #ff4444 red) contrasts clearly against the green field.

What makes it fun

  • Three-tier decision pressure — every mole that appears forces a sub-second read (regular/star/bomb) before tapping, adding a risk-reward layer on top of pure reflex
  • Combo multiplier snowball — landing a star mole at ×5 combo feels explosive; one slip collapses it, creating natural tension spikes
  • Escalating chaos — by level 5+ the screen has two moles up simultaneously with sub-second windows, turning the game into a satisfying hand-smashing frenzy
  • Instant restart — zero UI friction between "game over" and "playing again" keeps sessions feeling like one continuous escalation run
