NEW HAVEN, CT — Researchers at the Institute of Precambrian Studies confirmed Wednesday that a fossil bed unearthed in a remote stretch of tundra contains animal remains roughly 567 million years old, pushing back the known record of complex life on Earth. The paper describing the find has been under peer review since March, and the lead author says he has stopped checking his email before noon.
Dr. Owen Kessler, who led the dig, said the fossils themselves took eleven days to extract and eight months to date, a pace he called "honestly kind of brisk" once he compared it to what came next. Reviewer Two, whose identity remains confidential per journal policy, has asked for three separate rounds of revisions, including a request that Kessler "contextualize the specimens within the broader Ediacaran framework" in a section Kessler says already does that, twice. "I've reread that sentence so many times it's started to look like a fossil itself," Kessler said. "Honestly, give it another few hundred million years and somebody's going to dig it up and date it."
The journal, Deep Time Quarterly, has a stated average review turnaround of fourteen weeks. Kessler's submission is on week twenty-two. Editor-in-chief Priya Nadarajah said the delay reflects the paper's significance rather than any backlog, noting that "extraordinary claims about the dawn of animal life deserve extraordinary patience," a line she has now used in four separate emails to Kessler, each one slightly more apologetic than the last.

Reviewer Three entered the process in June and immediately requested that the team run an additional isotope analysis, a process that takes roughly ten weeks and that Kessler completed, mailed back, and is now waiting to hear about. A junior postdoc on the project, Maren Ibsen, has taken to marking the days on a whiteboard using a geologic timescale she drew by hand, with the current review period represented as a barely visible sliver at the very top labeled "us, probably." Asked how she was holding up, Ibsen said, "The rocks were patient for 567 million years. I've been patient for five months and I want to throw a chair."
An informal survey conducted by the institute's own newsletter found that six of eight recent papers submitted to major paleontology journals took longer to clear review than the geological interval they described. One 2024 paper on a single Triassic afternoon's worth of footprints took eleven months to publish.

Nadarajah maintains the journal is simply being thorough. "We take our time because the fossils certainly did," she said, before adding that Reviewer Two has requested one more clarifying figure and should have comments back "soon, relatively speaking."
At press time, Kessler had begun referring to the 567-million-year gap between the fossils' formation and their public description as "a rounding error."
