Description
The base rail is a 200 mm bar with five angled pegs for medal ribbons and a flat socket on its right end. A race bib clips onto the rail's bottom edge with a flexible tab, pinching the bib's top edge against the rail face. When the five hooks fill up, a 180 mm extension segment presses its tongue into the base rail's socket, adding four more hooks without taking the first rail off the wall or buying a whole new one.
It's generic sports hardware — no team names, no league marks, no event branding — so it works for a 5K runner, a youth soccer player, or anyone collecting medals from anything. The hooks are shaped to keep ribbons from sliding off, and the whole thing mounts with two screws per segment.
Why it sells
Medal display hangers are a mature, high-volume Etsy category with real review depth behind it. One acrylic-and-aluminum hanger has over 1,200 reviews at 4.9 stars [Running Medal Holder, 21 Hooks], and a personalized 3D-printed hanger from a single seller has over 8,200 reviews at 4.9 stars [Male Runner Medal Holder/Hanger]. A carved-wood version sits at 224 reviews and 5.0 stars with buyers specifically calling it "not tacky" and gift-worthy [3D Carved Wooden Medal Display], and a fourth listing markets directly to the "unique running gift" angle [Running Medal Hanger Display]. Multiple active Etsy search categories confirm sustained demand [Medal Display 3D Print], [3D Printed Race Medal Holder].
Every comparable listing is a single fixed-length piece sized for a set hook count. None of them grow — once a runner outgrows a 10-hook hanger, they're shopping for a replacement, not an add-on. This rail is built to expand instead.
Who buys it
Runners, triathletes, and youth-sport parents who've started collecting medals and don't yet know how many they'll end up with. It's a gift-shop item for running stores and race-day expos as much as an Etsy listing — sold as a starter kit now, with extension segments as a repeat purchase after the buyer's next few races.
Design overview
- Five hooks on the base segment, four more on each extension — a buyer starts small and adds length as the collection grows
- Tongue-and-groove connector locks segments edge to edge at full rail height, so the join carries real weight, not just a cosmetic seam
- Flexible-tab bib clip snaps onto the rail's bottom edge and pops off to swap bibs
- Hooks rise at a 30° angle with a bulbous tip, so ribbons don't slide off sideways
- No team names, league marks, or event logos anywhere — stays sellable to any sport
- Each segment mounts independently with its own two screws, so the display grows without re-drilling the first rail's holes
Dimensions
| Measurement | Value (mm) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Base segment width (X) | 200 | 5 hooks at 36 mm pitch |
| Extension segment width (X) | 180 | 4 hooks at 36 mm pitch |
| Rail depth (Y) | 30 | front to back, excluding hooks |
| Rail height (Z) | 45 | full segment height |
| Hook protrusion | 25 | from rail face, at 30° upward angle |
| Hook shaft / tip diameter | 8 / 10 | shaft diameter / bulbous tip diameter |
| Connector tongue/groove | 20 × 8 × 45 | W × D × H (full rail height) |
Parts list
| Part | Qty | Material | Size X×Y×Z (mm) | Print orientation | Supports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base rail segment | 1 | PETG | 200 × 30 × 45 | Flat, back face down | minimal (under hook overhangs) |
| Extension rail segment | 1 | PETG | 180 × 30 × 45 | Flat, back face down | minimal (under hook overhangs) |
| Bib clip | 1 | PETG | 60 × 20 × 15 | Flat, back face down | none |
Hardware and non-printed parts
- #6 × 25 mm pan-head wood screw × 4 (2 per rail segment, user-supplied) — through keyhole slots on each segment's back face
Fits and tolerances
| Mating parts | Fit type | Clearance per side |
|---|---|---|
| Base rail segment ↔ extension rail segment (tongue/groove) | Press | 0.15 mm |
| Bib clip ↔ rail bottom edge (slot) | Snap | 0.3 mm |
The segment connector uses a press fit because it's meant to stay put once joined; the bib clip uses a looser snap fit since it comes off every time a bib gets swapped.
Modeling guide
Origin sits at the bottom-left-back corner of the base rail segment. +X runs right along the rail, +Y runs forward away from the wall, +Z runs up.
Base rail segment
- Sketch the rail profile on the XZ plane: rectangle 200 × 45, corner radius 4. Extrude 4 in +Y to form the backplate.
- Extrude a second rectangle, 200 × 45 with no radius, by 8 more in +Y starting from the backplate's front face, to form the rail's solid body (total depth 12 so far — leave room for hook bosses, final rail depth including hooks is handled by the hook geometry below, body depth stays 12).
- Sketch 5 hook shafts on the body's front face, centered at X = 20, 56, 92, 128, 164, all at Z = 30: each a cylinder 8 mm diameter, extruded 20 mm forward at a 30° upward angle from the face normal.
- Cap each hook shaft with a bulbous tip: sphere 10 mm diameter, centered at the shaft's outer end.
- Cut two keyhole slots through the backplate: 9.5 mm cap / 4.5 mm shaft, 15 mm vertical travel, centered at (X = 30, Z = 22) and (X = 170, Z = 22).
- On the right end face (X = 200), cut a groove: a rectangular slot 20 wide (in Y) × 8 deep (in X) × 45 tall (full Z height), centered in Y, spanning the full height of the end face.
- On the bottom edge of the rail body (Z = 0 face), cut a slot for the bib clip: 56 wide (X) × 4 deep (Y) × 3 tall (Z), positioned anywhere along the bottom edge (clip can slide to any X position before engaging).
- Fillet all external edges 2 mm.
Extension rail segment
- Repeat steps 1–2 from the base segment at 180 × 45 instead of 200 × 45.
- Sketch 4 hook shafts centered at X = 18, 54, 90, 126, all at Z = 30, same geometry as the base segment's hooks.
- Cut two keyhole slots at (X = 20, Z = 22) and (X = 160, Z = 22).
- On the left end face (X = 0), add a tongue matching the base segment's groove: 20 wide (Y) × 8 deep (X) × 45 tall, protruding outward from the face.
- On the right end face (X = 180), cut a groove identical to the base segment's, for chaining a second extension.
- Fillet all external edges 2 mm.
Bib clip
- Sketch the clip body on the XZ plane: rectangle 60 × 10, corner radius 2. Extrude 8 in +Y.
- On the back edge, add a mounting tab matching the rail's bottom-edge slot: 56 wide (X) × 4 deep (Y) × 3 tall (Z), protruding from the clip's top-back corner.
- From the clip body's front face, extrude a cantilever tab 1.2 mm thick, 50 mm wide (X), 12 mm long (Y), angled 5° away from the body to create spring preload.
- Set the gap between the cantilever tab's resting position and the clip body's front face to 1.5 mm, for gripping a folded race bib.
- Fillet all external edges 1.5 mm.
Print settings
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Material | PETG |
| Nozzle | 0.4 mm |
| Layer height | 0.2 mm |
| Walls / perimeters | 4 |
| Infill | 20% gyroid |
| Supports | minimal, under each hook's upward overhang |
| Brim / adhesion | brim 5 mm on both rail segments |
| Notes | Orient hooks printing upward at their natural 30° angle rather than flat, to keep the overhang short enough for minimal support |
Assembly
- Press the extension rail segment's tongue into the base rail segment's groove until flush.
- Snap the bib clip's mounting tab into the slot on the rail's bottom edge, sliding to the desired X position.
- Mount the base segment to the wall using its keyhole slots over two screws set 140 mm apart.
- Mount the extension segment the same way once it's added.
- Hang medals by their ribbons over the hooks; clip a race bib under the bib clip's cantilever tab.
Variants and upsells
- Sell extension segments individually as a repeat purchase once a buyer's hook count fills up
- Offer a "starter kit" (base + one extension + clip) versus a "base only" cheaper entry listing
- Scale hook spacing (
hook_pitch) for chunkier trophy-style medals that need more clearance - Print a second bib clip as an add-on for runners who want to display two bibs side by side
Selling and distribution
Etsy is the strongest fit given the review depth already proven across comparable medal hangers — position the expandability as the headline differentiator in the listing title and photos. Running-store gift counters and race-expo vendor tables suit the physical starter kit as an impulse buy right after a race. Price the full starter kit at $24–36 (covers ~270 g PETG plus assembly time against the roughly $5 material cost) and extension segments separately at $10–14 each; sell the digital file at $8 under a CC BY-NC license.

Risks and IP notes
- Hook overhangs at 30° can droop slightly without good cooling — mitigate with minimal support and a layer-height check on the first hook before printing a full batch
- The connector joint is the rail's main load path when fully loaded with medals — mitigate by specifying 4 wall perimeters and a 0.15 mm press fit so the joint doesn't loosen under repeated use
- Medal hanger designs are common on Etsy, so differentiation rests on the modular add-on angle, not the hook shape — keep listing copy and photos focused on that
- No team names, league marks, race-series logos, or athlete likenesses appear anywhere in the design
